Apicoectomy

Apicoectomy is a microsurgical procedure performed to remove persistent infections at the tip of a tooth root when conventional root canal retreatment is not feasible or has failed. Infected tissues are removed, the root end is shortened and sealed with a biocompatible material.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia using tissue-friendly techniques, with the aim of preserving the tooth and restoring function. Postoperative comfort is supported by cold application, medication and tailored hygiene advice.
Indications
Persistent lesions after root canal therapy, inaccessible anatomy, posts or fractured instruments that prevent retreatment may indicate apicoectomy.
Prognostic Factors
Lesion size, root morphology, systemic health and field hygiene all affect outcomes. Regular controls and radiographic follow-up are recommended.
FAQs
Is it painful?
With local anaesthesia, pain is not felt during the
procedure; mild postoperative tenderness is manageable.
How long is recovery?
Soft tissues typically heal in 1–2 weeks;
bone healing takes longer.
Is success guaranteed?
It depends on clinical conditions and root
anatomy; a thorough assessment guides expectations.
